Learn the idea

Three things to notice

01

Centre and spread answer different questions

The mean, median and mode describe a typical value. Range, quartiles and standard deviation describe variation.

02

Outliers can move the mean

The median is often a better centre for skewed data because extreme values do not pull it as strongly.

03

Probability stays between 0 and 1

For equally likely outcomes, probability is favourable outcomes divided by total outcomes.

Do not memorise the words alone. The worked example shows how to choose and apply the idea.
